Donation Resource List: General Tips
  • You can contact the National Council of Nonprofit Associations to find the state agency that will direct you to specific local charities
  • Phone: 202.467.6262
  • Web: www.ncna.org
  • You can also call your local branch of the United Way.
  • Keep in mind that everything that you donate should be in good condition; Clothes should be clean and need no mending. Furniture should not be stained, torn, or broken. Electrical items should be in working order. Toys and games should be in working order and have all their pieces, etc. A good rule of thumb: Only donate items you would be comfortable giving to a friend or relative.
  • If you plan on claiming a tax deduction, the IRS requires items donated to be in good condition or better. This is stated under a provision of The Pension Protection Act of 2006.
  • Keep a list or a photo of items donated in the event you are audited.
  • Tax deductions – To see that an organization qualifies as a nonprofit, visit the IRS website.
  • ItsDeductible.com Software to use for tax-deductible donations. It has pre-set fair market prices on (almost) everything and is very easy to use. For those without a computer, the program comes in a paperback format. $25.00
  • To get a good idea of what you can claim per item visit The Salvation Army valuation guides at www.satruck.com
  • The Salvation Army (www.salvationarmy.org) and Goodwill Industries (www.goodwillindustries.org) are two of the most recognizable names when it comes to donations. Check their websites for locations near you.
  • Other great local community organizations and charities that will accept donations:
    • Big Brother/Big Sister Organizations • Camps
    • Churches • Drama departments
    • Food shelves and soup kitchens • Historical societies
    • Libraries • Nursing Homes
    • Prisions • Military organizations
    • Schools • Scout troops
    • Teen Pregnancy clinics • Women's shelters
    • Veterinary clinics
Donation Resource List: NY Area
  • Call the NYC Stuff Exchange or visit them on the web to find donation opportunities in your neighborhood. This service also gives information about where to repair or buy second-hand goods.

COMPUTERS/PRINTERS:

Donating or Recycling An Old Computer:
**For a fee, Dell, HP and IBM will recycle old computers, monitors, printers (and more) from any manufacturer. The prices vary, but range from $15 to $39 per box. Dell and HP offer home pickup, IBM requires you to drop it off with UPS (home pickup is extra). All three require you to first box up the equipment and note that wiping out a computer hard disk of your files is your responsibility. Dell and HP offer rebates, IBM does not. As of July 2003, Dell was offering a rebate of 10% on later purchases from their web site. HP offers coupons for later purchases from their web site. The coupons are roughly the same value as the recycling cost and vary with the equipment and number of boxes.
